Northampton is in the East Midlands, a county town of Northamptonshire, with archaeological roots going back to as far as the Bronze Age. A relatively large town, Northampton is divided into 33 electoral wards and also subdivided into suburbs, parishes and other less formal areas including Rectory, Westone, Old Duston and Kings Heath. The towns closest to Northampton are Towcester and Wellingborough to name a few, with the metropolitan city of Birmingham just 50 miles away. Located on the River Nene (the 10th longest river in the U.K.), which arises from three sources in the county, Northampton has an estimated population of over 200,000 at the 2011 census.

Northampton: Rich in History

Rich in history Northampton first appeared in literature in 914 under a vastly different name, ham tune, which literally means home town. Eventually North was added as a prefix to distinguish the town from others of similar names and the name Northantone evolved into Norhamptone and then Northampton which it has been known by since the 17th century. Beginning in the Bronze Age, Northampton was originally a series of small settlements and following the Danish invasion, the central part of the town was turned into a stronghold and became a base for one of the Danish armies in 850. Northampton achieved national significance with the Norman conquest of England. Its location in the country made it a valuable strategic focus for government and an easy meeting place for events social, military and political. Despite the Great Fire of Northampton destroying much of the town centre in 1675, today Northampton continues to expand. This is due much to the growth of the footwear and leather industry, the erection of Northampton Power Station and its growth into a commuter town after the M1 opening and New Town designation.

Northampton is near junctions 15, 15a and 16 on the M1 motorway. The A45 and the A43 also establish links between Northampton and much of the rest of the country from London to Leeds and towns in Northamptonshire. Its railway station is on the West Coast Main Line with services bound to London and Birmingham in the opposite direction; whilst in town, Stagecoach buses operate to many of the outlying towns and villages making Northampton extremely well connected.
