Newport is a city in the South east of Wales on the River Usk which rises on the northern slopes of the Black Mountain in the western Brecon Beacons National Park area. It is both a university and a cathedral city with a population of over 300,000. 45 miles away from Gloucester, 11 miles North East of Cardiff and on the opposite side of the Severn Estuary from Bristol – Newport is in a central position in relation to other major cities. It is the 3rd largest city in Wales and happens to form a part of the Cardiff-Newport metropolitan area (combined population of 1.1 million).

Newport: Roman Beginnings

Its proximity to the Mouth of the Severn estuary makes it no surprise that the city has been a port since the medieval times. Originally a town, it expanded from its initial Roman beginnings as Caerleon village. During the 19th century, Newport saw significant growth when its port became a centre for coal exports from the easterly valleys of South Wales. It was a coal export hub until the rise of Cardiff around 1850. Later, in the 20th century, when the docks became much less important it remained an engineering and manufacturing centre. Post-war, the construction of the Severn Bridge and the opening of the Llanwern steelworks really helped connect Newport and reinvigorate the city from the unemployment and harsh economic conditions.

Major regeneration projects have been undertaken in the Newport area since 2004. Improving the city’s road network was the first plan to action which saw Kingsway and Queensway transformed into boulevards. Newport rail station was redeveloped to include a new building opened in 2010 and a longer platform 4 with plans to open new suburban railway stations in the future. A state-of-the-art District General Hospital is to replace the Royal Gwent Hospital with a possible M4 relief road also proposed for the future.
