Built in 1596 - the Whitgift Almshouses were part of the foundation established by John Whitgift, the Archbishop of Canterbury. Formerly known as The Hospital of Holy Trinity, it is the only standing original building, of which its restoration was commemorated by HM Queen Elizabeth II in 1983. Interested in something more…‘modern’? Then head over to Purley Way where you’ll find Airport House. Croydon Airport contained the very first international terminal until its closure in 1959.
Now a centre for aviation - visitors can explore the home of many major technical advances such as runway marker lines and an early radio direction finder (RDF).

If you’re looking for something less educational pop over to Croydon’s leading shopping destination, The Whitgift Centre, where you can shop to your heart’s content at over 140 retailers. Day out with the kids? No problem. Norbury Park is one of many open spaces with facilities such as a multi-games court and children’s playground. De-stress at Tenpin Bowling Croydon or battle it out on the green (albeit a tiny battle) at World of Golf - Dragon Quest. Home to The South End Food Festival, despite not having as much of a foodie reputation as some other towns in the capital, Croydon has abundant food offerings. Sip on a fairtrade tea or coffee at The Clocktower Café, head to Surrey Street Market (c. 1237) for to-go street food, then finish off with some socialising at one of Croydon’s many great pubs.
