Colchester didn’t appear under its current name though; it was described under its pre-Roman name ‘Camulodunum’. Sadly Pliny died a few years after mention of Colchester, as one of the victims of the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, in Pompeii. Interestingly enough, Colchester is alleged as the home of three of the most well-known nursery rhymes: ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’, ‘Old King Cole’ and ‘Humpty Dumpty’.
