DNA Test – The Importance of Getting It Right
It is vital that the correct procedure for collecting and testing samples for a DNA Test is followed. DNA can provide the answers to a number of questions, but it’s important that samples are collected correctly to ensure the DNA of the person being tested is not diluted by DNA from anyone else. This is why there’s a strict set of rules governing the way in which the DNA test sample is taken. If your DNA is in any way compromised you will not be able to rely on the results.
Following The Guidelines
When taking a DNA test a sample of your DNA will be required. In most cases, especially where using a sampling kit provided by the DNA test company, you will need to be extremely careful when taking the sample. Follow all the guidelines which, in the case of WhozTheDaddy? tests, include:
- Do not drink coffee or tea or use tobacco products – the chemicals and toxins present in tea, coffee and tobacco leave a residue in your mouth, which will be transferred onto the swab you use to collect your sample and could mean that your DNA test can’t be processed. We recommend not taking any of these products for at least four hours before taking the sample.
- Make sure your mouth is clean – the best DNA results come from a clean sample so if your mouth is clean and rinsed with warm water you will be able to give a better sample which in turn increases your chances of obtaining an accurate result.
- Don’t touch the swab – the swabs used for collecting samples should only have the DNA from your mouth on them. Touching the swab or allow anyone else to do so could contaminate your sample. The swab may also become contaminated if it is put down on an unclean surface so once you have taken the sample make sure you follow the instructions about storing it before it is returned to the DNA test company.
- Get someone to sample for you – if your DNA test is part of a legal process you will need an independent person present to take your sample. This will usually be a doctor or medical professional and they must also follow the guidelines closely.
