How To Do a DNA Test at Home

If you do a DNA test at home, the results will not stand up in a court of law but can be used to satisfy personal concerns. The reasons for wanting to carry out a home DNA test are varied. They include simple curiosity; peace of mind; a young person's or adult's deep emotional need to find their biological father whose identity has never been known; a confirmation of siblingship or as part of research genealogy. The results of such tests can change peoples' lives dramatically. It is for this reason that the best companies offer guidance in choosing the right test for you and helping you in your decision making process.

There are no age limits to having a test. They can be carried out on a 90-year old or a one month old baby. Tests can also be performed on unborn children but these are more complicated.

DNA Test at Home

Once you have chosen your DNA testing company you will see that there is a choice of home tests available to you. Different tests are used to find out different relationships. The following home tests are usually available: paternity; paternity with mother; maternity; siblingship; Y-STR male lineage; X-SV female lineage; twin zygosity; missing parent; aunt, uncle or grandparent and DNA identification profiling.

These home DNA tests are extremely simple to carry out. DNA samples from cheek cells of the people being tested are taken and analysed in a laboratory. If there is a match in the DNA then it is confirmed that the people are related. Paternity tests are 99.99% accurate. If the DNA samples do not match it is 100% definite that the people are not related.

How To Do A DNA Test at Home

So how is the test actually done at home? All home DNA testing kits come with very clear and easy to follow instructions.

Before starting with a DNA sample collection it is a good idea not to drink any hot drinks such as tea or coffee or any soft drinks (other than water), not to eat and not to smoke any tobacco products for one hour prior to the test. Following these guidelines decreases the chances of your DNA sample failing to yield sufficient DNA.

The mouth should be rinsed with warm water. In babies, if possible, make sure they have not fed for one to two hours prior to taking the sample if breastfeeding.

Different companies provide slightly different instructions on how to take a swab, but in general two sterile swabs per person are provided. It is important not to touch these swabs or put them down on anything in order to avoid your sample becoming contaminated. Place the swabs one at a time inside your mouth and drag it along the inside of your mouth, under your tongue and along the inside of your lips for forty-five seconds. The swab should then be left to dry for about one hour, again, not touching anything. The swabs are then placed in sample collection envelopes provided by the company. You will need to fill in the appropriate forms also provided by the company and then return the material to them.

Test results will take five working days.
