DNA Testing Solves Literary Riddle

DNA testing is a sure-fire method in finding out who’s who.

Scientists from Innsbruck University in Austria are specialists in unravelling mysteries. They have used DNA testing to attempt to solve riddles and secrets that have been trapped in time. The scientists have used DNA testing to help  to identify Mozart’s skull and they have also used DNA tests for more recent tragedies which include identifying victims of the tsunami of 2004

DNA Testing and the ‘Schiller Code’

Now scientists are hoping that DNA testing will finally solve the ‘Schiller code’. Friedrich Schiller was Germany’s most renowned playwright and was famous for writing the Ode to Joy. The poet and philosopher however created as much of a stir in death as he did in life because two skulls both thought to be that of Schiller became the discussion of a long running mystery for literary historians.

Family Remains Exhumed

To successfully undertake the DNA testing, Schiller’s family remains have had to be exhumed. The bones and teeth of his wife and son will be used to determine which skull is the authentic one when they are compared with the DNA in the skulls skeleton and hair.

Mixed Bones In Mass Grave

The mystery surrounding Schiller’s skull began after he had been buried in a mass grave. The mayor of Weimar searched out Schiller’s skull and randomly picked one from the grave site. It was stored in a library and proclaimed to be that of the great poet. The skull was then removed Goethe the German writer and stored in his house. By 1827 the remains were once again moved and were said to be fake when a researcher produced yet another skull claiming that also was Schiller’s. Modern DNA testing will confirm which skull is indeed the authentic one. It is even rumoured that the original skull is neither of the two in question but that it remains buried under Goethe’s floorboards.

Will DNA Testing Put The Mystery To Rest?

The mystery of the two skulls have intrigued literary and forensic historians, but it is thought that DNA testing will finally reveal the truth and put the literary mystery finally to rest.
