DNA Testing – Solving the Riddle of London’s Lost Boy

According to a report on the BBC, a mystery surrounding the identity of a little boy lost in London may be solved with the use of DNA testing. A DNA test is essentially an infallible means of determining relationships.

DNA testing has many uses in the modern world; from solving crimes to establishing paternity and, according to a report on the BBC, DNA testing is to be used on Gurrinder Singh, a 9 year old Sikh boy who was abandoned at a London bus stop. The DNA testing hopes to establish whether the boy belongs to a couple in India who claim their son was kidnapped 3 years ago and matches the descriptions of the lost boy in London.

DNA Testing – Answering Questions

Gurrinder Singh, the 9 year boy abandoned in London, only speaks Punjabi and has difficulty describing how he came to be in London. According to the report on the BBC, a couple from the North Indian province of Bihar claim that the boy is their son, Sintu. The Metropolitan Police are taking their claims seriously and have carried out DNA testing on the boy in the hope of establishing whether the child is their son. The use of a DNA test is applicable in this case as by taking samples from the child and the man who claims to be his father in India, the authorities will be able to establish with 100% certainty if the child is not the man’s son and with a 99% level of accuracy of Gurrinder Singh is his son, Sintu.

DNA Testing – Language Barrier

The case of Gurrinder Singh was further complicated by the fact that the boy only speaks Punjabi but he was able to convey via an interpreter that he was left at the bus stop by his white “uncle” with whom he had lived for 2 or 3 years. According to the BBC report, the Metropolitan Police are yet to instigate any criminal proceedings and haven’t ruled out the notion that the boy is a victim of child trafficking. The results of the DNA testing are being awaited and it is hoped that the boy will soon be reunited with his parents.
